I sighed and opened a new tab on my laptop's internet browser, leaving YouTube open so I could continue watching the Marble Hornets Entries. I checked my Facebook then exited out of it after saying goodnight to Sarah, checking my phone for the time even though the time was clearly on the laptop. 12:32. I rubbed my eyes and yawned, switching back to the video and continued to watch. "Why am I watching this?" I wondered out loud causing my sister to grumble in her sleep "Huh?" She asked "Talking to myself. Go back to sleep Steph." She shrugged and rolled over to fall into sleep again.
I sat on my bed watching Entry 19 until my phone began to ring, causing me to jump out of my skin. I paused my video and answered the phone call from my best friend Soyoung. "Hey." I said and put a hand to my chest, trying to calm the pounding in my chest. "Hey. How're ya doing?" "Fine. You 'bout scared the shit outta me though." She laughed quietly "How?" "Calling me randomly." She laughed again and I sighed "What do you want?" "Were you sleeping?" She asked "No. Just watching Marble Hornets." "At 12:45 in the morning?" She asked with another laugh "Mhm. Oh shit!" I jumped as the man in the mask appeared on screen. There was something about him that seemed off -besides the fact that he was in someone's room and watching them sleep-. He was just a man in a mask....Why was he so terrifying?
"What is it?" Soyoung asked and I paused the video just as his face appeared right in front of the camera. "N-nothing....Just the video." "Is it that scary?" I sat there and stared at the screen....I knew it was just a video but still...The man in the mask seemed like he was staring right at me...Like he could climb through the laptop like that bitch Sadako from The Ring. I pressed play again and continued to watch the video while Soyoung began to talk again even though I wasn't listening, I was too wrapped up in the video. I caught words here and there like 'mom' 'my boyfriend' 'friends' 'that bitch' but I heard the same thing pretty much everyday so I knew what she was talking about.
After my video had finished I then heard her say "Kay? Are you listening?" "Yeah." I lied "Well what do you think about it?" "About what?" She laughed again and then sighed "I said that-" Her voice began to get distorted and I sat up, thinking it was because of the bad signal in my room. And that's when it started. The light tapping on my window. Instantly a chill went through me and I straightened up immediately. For some reason I looked behind me, as if the masked man was sitting there staring. But he wasn't. "Kay? Are you okay?" "Huh?" There was a silence. "S-Soyoung?" "I said you gasped." Did I? When? "Yeah I'm fine." I replied with a smile even though I knew she could see me.
Minutes past with the casual conversation, the tapping still constant but barely even audible for Soyoung's talking....But then the tapping got quicker. Three consistent taps before a long scratch, like someone had ran their nails down the glass. My heart beat quickened as I stared at the window. "Kay?" I heard Soyoung's voice but I wasn't paying attention, my eyes were fixated on the window. I couldn't see anything because of the blinds and darkness, yet my eyes always averted back to the window. "H-hey." I said. Soyoung said it back then again I said "H-hey." My voice shaking. "Are you okay?" "Yeah." I said and looked toward the TV. A cooking show was on. Nothing special or interesting. But still a distraction that I needed.
"Well today Eben..." Her voice droned out and I looked back at my window. The tapping still hadn't stopped. I heard another tapping but it wasn't from the window...It was from my closet. I looked over to my closet quickly and I saw something...It looked like a face...Just barely visible through the open door...Hidden slightly by the darkness...The face was white with black eyes and a small mouth...Just like the masked man from Entry 19....It can't be real.
The tapping got louder and I quickly looked at my sister. "H-hold on." I put my phone on mute so that Soyoung wouldn't hear me. "Stephy. Stephy wake up." She groaned in her sleep and I leaned over to shake her a little. "Steph. Is Twilah outside?" "I dunno." She said sleepily and I bit my lip. "Can you go see? I think she's at the window." It's not like it wasn't possible, if we didn't open the living room door for our cat she'd come to our window...But I thought she was inside. Stephanie grumbled and stood up. She walked past the closet and my eyes widened. The face wasn't there anymore.
I looked behind me, there was nothing. I looked back and Stephanie was lifting the blinds only to reveal Twilah sitting right on the windowsill. She lifted the window, sending another wave of fear over me even though she was only letting the cat in. It was as if she was letting something unknown inside of our room. Something I couldn't see. When the window shut and the blinds shut again, she let Twilah out of our room and laid back in her bed.
I un-muted my phone. "Hey." I said a bit more cheery than before. "Hi? You okay?" "Yep. I'm fine now. Just got freaked out for a bit." I laughed nervously, still thinking about that face. Where did it go? "About what?" She laughed. "There was tapping on my window. Just the cat." She laughed and then in a cocky tone she said "Watch out it might be Slenderman." Why bring that up? I thought. Sure I had been obsessing over him for the past few days but I couldn't help it.
It's very easy to become obsessed with Slenderman, I knew he wasn't real but simply because it's the obsession with him that makes him truly real. Makes you wonder what happens if you stop seeking him out...When I'd watch short films about him or documentaries, I noticed that I felt a greater sense of fear not when he's ON screen, but when he's OFF screen...I find that it's when I stop looking for information about him that I suddenly become most compelled to look for more. It's eerie. The truth is, there is plenty of folk lore that is VERY similar to the Slenderman, but none of them terrified me the way Slenderman did. I was afraid.
I laughed uneasily and told Soyoung to shut up jokingly. "He's gonna kidnap you in your sleep." She laughed. Such a twisted soul. I thought. Must be why we get along so well. I pulled my internet browser again and typed in 'Slenderman' in the search engine. I looked through pictures and read through stories while listening to the adventures of Soyoung's dreams from the countless naps she had taken that day. I laughed here and there and that's when the tapping began again.
My heart quickened and I stared back at the window. I quickly reached for the knife I kept under my pillow. The blade was 6 inches and yet it didn't make me feel safe. I listened to the tapping and I didn't realize that I was cursing under my breath. "Shit. Mother of fuckin' god tacos." Soyoung laughed "God tacos?" She asked and I laughed nervously "Mhm." "What's wrong....I'm not used to you being so freaked out. You're never scared." I wanted to reply but I was fixated on the window. "Even in your old house. That place was creepy as hell." "Mhm." Was all I could say.
We talked for a few more minutes then the room went completely black. My laptop went into hibernation and the TV stopped. "Damn, damn, damn, damn!" I stammered. I dropped my phone instantly and searched my bed aimlessly for the remote. I heard a slight laugh...And the tapping stopped. That wasn't Soyoung. It sounded like a man. I gripped the handle of my knife and removed it from its sheath...Just in case.
"Kay? Kay, what's wrong?" I heard her ask but I didn't reply. I was shaking, I ran my fingers along the laptop until I found the power button and quickly pushed it. I hit the speakerphone button just as she said "Kay what was that?" I typed in the password for the laptop and looked at my phone. "What do you mean?" "I thought I heard someone say your name." I stopped. My hand on the top of the laptop. "D-don't joke around." "I'm serious." "H-hold on."
I turned the speakerphone off as I turned the laptop toward the window hesitantly using it for a light to look around the room. I turned it toward the closet and gasped loudly. There was a man...No...IT couldn't be a man....It was standing in the corner of the room. Beside my TV. I stared at it paralyzed examining it in fear...It appeared to be wearing a suit, standing perfectly straight. My eyes trailed up to it's face....If only it had one...Staring back at me was like a blank canvas that only struck fear into the pit of my soul.
I found the remote and turned on the TV quickly. Taking my eyes off the creature for only a second. When the TV illuminated the room...It was no longer there. Horrified I pushed myself as far as I could against my wall, my hand tight around the knife. I put my phone to my ear...All I heard was static and distorted laughter. I ended the call and as soon as I put it down. It rang again making me jump. It said it was from Soyoung again. I answered "Hello?" I heard the same thing...Hysterical screams replaced the laughter and I hung up, tossing my phone to a basket.
Covering my head I shook and felt the knife against my arm...I didn't care. I just didn't want to look. But I did. It was there again...In the middle of my room. Watching me....Even though there were no eyes...I could feel it watching me. I dropped the knife as I heard a sound...It sounded like a mix of water being moved around in a sink and wind during a light storm. From behind it I saw a long eel like tendril followed by three more hoist it up into the air as it stalked toward me.
The room went black again.
